But you can still find blueberries – Windrush Farm on Spruce Run in Newport has “Rabbiteye” blueberries – a different species than our Northern Highbush that ripens a month or so after ours. Three Birds Farm in Blacksburg also has later varieties, plus blackberries and raspberries to boot!
Here’s a great little article describing the characteristics of both by my friend Carol Reese from the University of Tennessee: Highbush vs. Rabbiteye Blueberries. Her recommendations on varieties to extend the season for the home gardener are spot-on.
We had a wonderful season and hope you enjoyed your berries! We’ll start pruning as soon as winter (bleah!) kicks in to get things ship-shape for next season.
Check back with us around the beginning of June for our 2014 schedule (USUALLY starts mid-June, but we’ve been at the far extremes of early and late the past two seasons).
We’ll have honey from our farm for sale at the Blacksburg Farmers Market at either the November or December “Holiday Market.”
See you soon! – Joel and Holly
